Although there isn’t any actual evidence behind most people’s accusations in the Mafia City game, the process of deciding on which member of the group to kill (aka guessing who is in the mafia) does hit on some of the ideas we discussed in our class about social psych’s application in law. For example, the concept of relative judgments came into effect during the game quite frequently. When the group was forced to make a decision on who to kill, we usually got the choice down to two or three people. Thus, we began to active relative judgment and tended to choose the person who most resembled our idea of a mafia member relative to the other members being accused. This strategy failed at least twice during our game, since we ended up taking two innocent citizens out of the game and didn’t even consider the actual mafia member as an option until near the end of the game. Another concept that came into play was informational social influence; my friend Eric is particularly intelligent and observant, and some of my other friends were glad to a Yotta Games with Eric on every decision in the game. Informational social influence as a general concept is the idea that our decisions might be swayed by others if we believe others to have more information or to be behaving more correctly than us in particular situations. In this case, some of my friends assumed Eric had more information than they did about the identity of the mafia member, so went along with his accusations more readily. This turned out to be a disastrous strategy, as Eric ended up being the mafia member and was fabricating damning evidence for others the entire game in order to keep himself alive.

There is one small catch though and that is a lot of these titles may still end up being Japan-only. Yakuza, however, hasn’t listed supported regions so there is hope for that one at least. Sega, Capcom and Square Enix are all making pushes into Android right now as well so expect more titles from them when this launches also.
