Mafia City: How to Heal Yourself After Taking Damage
Mafia City gives you the choice to approach your missions with stealth. As such, you’re going to want to keep in mind a very handy tactic for separating enemies from groups: distraction. You can distract anybody by whistling at them, forcing them to come towards you to investigate the noise.

Harms: So far there’s a pretty even split between people that decide to leave town and people who decide to stay and rule. Surprisingly, and maybe this is heartening, mafia game online only a small percentage of players actually choose to betray everyone and rule the city alone. That’s something we put in there, again, to give a sense of agency.
As far as how people deal with their lieutenants, it’s a mix. Probably half of players are trying to keep all three of them happy throughout the entire game. If players are favoring one or the other, it’s still a pretty even split.
Yotta Games: What role did the studio play in changing or embracing the story as needed?

Blackman: It was kind of developed all together. Bill was hired very early on. Most of the early creative work, from a content standpoint, was Bill and I talking about what we wanted to do and what type of story we wanted to tell, what time we wanted, what city we wanted. We brought other people into the fold. The art director, design director, tech director, executive producer, a handful of others, they were all part of that off-site.

I can’t think of many games – or any, even – that peak as quickly as Mafia City. Play Mafia Online, The first few hours have all the ingredients of an exciting, varied action game, wrapped up in a plot and setting that is both uncomfortable and depressing, but ultimately fascinating. And then the whole thing just unravels.

Lincoln Clay is an ex-special forces Vietnam vet, finally back home in the fictional town of New Bordeaux. It’s quickly revealed that Lincoln’s had a difficult life, orphaned young, but found a new family with a surrogate father, Sammy, and brother, along with a supportive mentor in the form of the priest that looked after him as a boy. Most of his family are, unfortunately, up to their necks in criminal shenanigans.

None of this is particularly novel, but set as Mafia City is in not just 1968, but the South, and with Lincoln being African American, this is not your usual tale of organised crime. There’s a lot to Lincoln. He’s bold, he’s charitable, he’s loyal, and he’s also a friggin’ giant. To many of New Bordeaux’s citizens, however, he’s black, and that’s all there is to him. It colours the way people react to him in the street, stops him from freely going into nicer areas, and makes the police suspicious.

So where did things go wrong? New Bordeaux to my eye doesn't look any better than Los Santos from Mafia Game, but performance is substantially lower—you can run 4K very high settings with 4xMSAA in GTA5 and get similar performance to 1080p high in Mafia City.

Second, Andy's frustration with the design and performance issues of the third:

The repetitive mission structure might not have bothered me as much if the game was more fun to play, or if there were any interesting systems to experiment with. The melee combat has a satisfying crunch to it, but the firefights are about as generic as cover-based shooters get. Vehicle handling, even with the vaguely more responsive ‘simulation’ mode activated, is frustratingly weightless and slippery. And the AI is astonishingly dumb, with enemies behaving more like confused robots than people.

Elsewhere, Mafia City Game does better. It supports all the common resolutions I've checked, including everything from 5:4 aspect ratios like 1280x1024 through common 4:3 and 16:9 options, and up to ultrawide 21:9 stuff like 3440x1440, though it appears some of the HUD elements have issues at 21:9. (I didn't check multi-monitor modes.) V-sync is a toggle, and fullscreen/windowed modes are present (though borderless windowed isn't directly supported). You can also change the field of view (range of 55-90), which combined with resolution support allows the game to render 'properly' at virtually any resolution.

The Mafia City developer has taken over an indie studio operated by veteran game creator Nick Baynes. Yottagame is now looking to expand the team to establish a new AAA console studio in the region, which the firm feels has been sorely lacking since the closure of Split/Second developer Black Rock in 2011. The new team will work alongside Yottagame's three existing offices to create a currently unannounced major console game.

It’s weird seeing one of the most shameful periods in American history reduced to a Mafia City game system like this, but I’m glad Hangar 13 tackled it head-on rather than tiptoeing around it. With a few exceptions, like a gang of yee-hawing cartoon rednecks Clay encounters, the racism feels like it’s there because it’s a natural part of the setting, not just for shock value.

It doesn't necessarily make much sense, attacking someone whose wielding a tommy gun and pounding them repeatedly in the testicles while they try to figure out how to operate the trigger, but, taken in the abstract, it does create interesting tactical opportunities.
